A whole New (Hotel) look on Athens

Looking for a place to stay in Athens but quite bored by the standard accommodations in the city center? I see… you’re looking for something authentic, something New! Stop searching: New Hotel Athens, by YES! Hotels is awaiting you. Welcomed with a cold glass of water and some typical Greek sweets, we were captivated by this hotel’s story.

There are several unusual and unexpected aspects about this hotel. First, this place is designed by a renowned Brazilian design duo (Campana Brothers, Humberto and Fernando Campana) who accepted their first hotel project in history in conjunction with architectural students from the University of Thessaly.

New Hotel Athens encompasses the heritage of its past by using recycled parts of the old hotel and reinterpreted local materials to create a complete work of art. In other words, rubbish has been transformed into contemporary artwork.

New Hotel Athens

New Hotel Athens took inspiration from Athenian culture to create three different room types using different art features:

  • Karagiozis (shadow puppet, character from Greek folklore),
  • Evil Eye (Greek use this symbol to guard against ill omen),
  • Post Card (assortment of historic postcards from the 50’s and 80’s displaying a glimpse of old Athens).

We slept in the Karagiozis room: a colourful room with a combination of a solid bamboo floor with pink walls, golden accents and a wooden ceiling. The natural daylight from the immense windows give a calming touch to the rather vibrant room. The design mirrors and furniture are remarkable with a striking solid brass washbasins in the shape of a fragmented rock in the bathroom.

Art Lounge

The whole hotel is based upon the principle of reinterpreting local materials and integrating it into the reception hall, into the guest rooms and also into the New Hotel Athens Art Lounge. Launched in 2013 and situated on the 7th floor of the hotel, the Art Lounge offers outstanding food and cocktails, topped off with panoramic views of Athens. Furthermore, the Art Lounge houses a library with over 2000 art books for guests to borrow. Sit back and relax with a book on the terrace, or admire the 360° views of Athens historical landmarks, including the Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill, Syntagma Square and the Parliament. The Art Lounge offers dinner consisting of small dishes served throughout the day. By night the lounge transforms into a chic cocktail and cigar bar, and is also open for Sunday brunch.
