The Terhills Hotel Maasmechelen, part of the Different Hotels group, is a 4 stars hotel in a historic mine building. Located between Maasmechelen village and National Park Connecterra, it’s an ideal base to discover Maasmechelen during a weekend. The charming lady at the reception told me that the hotel aims to offer a cocktail of fashion, nature and comfort… and that’s exactly what we discovered during a sunny September weekend.

Terhills hotel

As you walk through the beautiful French garden with its fountain and blooming flowers, at first sight you wouldn’t think about a mining site at all. This impressive and majestic building dates back to 1932 and used to be the former Eisden mine’s management building. The architect Vittorio Simoni’s goal was to rebuild the hotel with local elements from the Limburg region. You will notice soon enough that all the gorgeous interior elements and pieces of art are manufactured by artists of companies from the region.

The rooms

The hotel has 60 rooms in total, of which 7 suites. Every room offers a fully equipped bathroom, a very comfortable (double) bed, air-conditioning, a desk, a safe, a flatscreen television, minibar, a complimentary bottle of water, a Nespresso machine,… everything you need for a snug stay. Don’t forget to ask for a room with garden view. Nothing better than waking up with the view of these wonderful French gardens!

The Neighbourhood

The hotel used to be part of the Eisden mine, which was actively used for coal mining until its closure in 1987. Right in the middle of the gardens, you will find the entrance of Connecterra and its two impressive mine shafts with headframes. Formerly the Eisden mining site, visitors nowadays can enjoy a surprising change of landscape with stunning nature and spectacular panoramic views! Connecterra is also a gateway to the National Park Hoge Kempen. Read all about our afternoon stroll here.
